The Grey-headed Flying-fox

You can find one of Australia's largest bats, the Grey-headed Flying-fox hanging out along the Murray River in Albury.Flying-foxes or 'fruit-bats' as they are also referred to, play a critical role as pollinators and seed dispersers of eucalypts and other native plants across eastern Australia. Flying-foxes are often seen (and mostly heard) at night, as they forage for food across the landscape. Research has shown that flying-foxes have the amazing ability to travel well over 50 km in one night before returning to their roost or moving onto another area. Over recent years flying-fox numbers have increased within our urban area leading to increased contact and sometimes conflict with humans. Albury City Council has and continues to work with relevant authorities and the local community to monitor, manage and promote the importance of this species to ensure we can continue to live alongside each other in harmony.
